• Type begins as pictographs on walls.
  
• Large Illustrations become symbols over time, so that they are more compressed and easier to travel with. Egyptians have word signs (logorhythms) and syllabic signs (& #, ect). Symbols represent sounds. Cuneiform (wedge shapes) for writing are invented.
  
• Phenicians alter the cuneiform and made 22 signs (all consonants) and the reader filled in the vowel sounds as appropriate.
  
• Greeks borrow from Phenician right-to-left writing and 100 years later changed it from left-to-right. They also altered the names. (Alpha, Beta, etc)

Homework: Pick a font. (aka Times New Roman, Arial, etc.) and research the font and creater. Create a sketchbook page including your research, font, and labels (as above). Be sure to make the page represent the "character" of the font.
