If I wanted to get into a good program in the humanities my GRE score would be awesome.

On the other hand a 690 is like the bare minimum for anything I actually want to do in the sciences. Although for biology they might focus on the high verbal scores to offset the lower quant. scores.

They say a GRE score is not important if you have lots of other crap to balance it out. But then, my GPA is average (3.1) and I can only think of 1 person to even ask for a letter.

That being said, I've never really considered getting a degree in the humanities. I imagine I could get into anything that doesn't have a strict connection to undergrad crap.

I'm supposed to be a mad scientist, that was my dam calling.
I suppose I can just be an alcoholic.

i still need to take the GRE. other people have said it isn't bad, and i traditionally test pretty well. but i've been out of undergrad for over 3 years now, so it's a little scary. do they have practice questions online or something so i could check it out?

On the site you register for the there is a full length mock exam. Me and one other person have both had nearly identical scores on that practice and on the test itself. I think they call it GRE PowerPrep2 or something.

For study-aids I found < http://www.sparknotes.com/testprep/gre/ > to be incredibly helpfull.

Find the Math101 thing and go through the four sections. Its the best most comprehensive list of math-type things you need to know for it.

I'd suggest studying for the math section even if your going into something like art or English or whatever. Theres a whole lot of really simple things you can learn to boost your grade in a pretty short amount of time.

also, and this is something i really wish I had done, go find the list of GRE essay questions and write out a few of them. Use a timer and limit yourself to the 30 minutes you get on the test.

I tend to think of myself as a decent essay writer, but its just a whole nother game when you only have 30 minutes.

cool, thanks! i'm probably set on math, but i'll look into it anyway.

the time constraint on the essays would pose a much bigger issue.

I applied for Teach For America and a few library science programs and nothing required the GRE. My grad school didn't require it either, as being part of TFA pre-qualified me. Yay for me.

It is not a something I would suggest going through unless you have too.
