Power just went out.. and it's not appearing to be coming back on..

I'm using Woohu though so apparently the power in downtown Cedar Springs is still on. I was just about to take a shower when it went out.. I might just go showerless now.. and head into the building. I feel gross though. Bleh.

All of the web sites have been running fine since the big meltdown episode of trying to upgrade things and the original web server freaking out. So today I decided I'd finally shut down the original web server. I couldn't login to it remotely anymore, so I was afraid to logout of the console, so it's just been logged in forever now. Anyway, I shut it down, it all came back up just fine, figured out why I couldn't login remotely anymore.

But, so much is still messed up on it now that I'd probably just give in and do a fresh install. There's a whole bunch of files and data on it, but everything majorly important got moved to the current web server long ago.. However, as it is I've got a more servers than I possibly need at this point in time so I'll probably just shut it down and leave it for when I really need to do something with it.

It's plugged into backup right now, and I'd like to use that slot for the current web server. Far more important, as shown by the power flicker a while back.. And with winter and snow coming.. My 12 minutes of backup power won't do a whole lot, but it helps on the small events. ;)

Woke up, sites were down. Got to the building and Consumers Energy is blocking off the area around the building and apparently doing massive work.

So.. At least the power was on when I got here, but the main web server isn't on backup at the moment so it went down along with the TC servers. Now I guess I'm going to hang out around here for a while or something in case they bump the power again..

New security images in place. They work, and they don't cause pages to randomly load halfway. Yay.

You can even reload them if you can't read them.. Or LISTEN to them! Intense. Added to all my sites that currently used captcha.

Nobody has reported it (because nobody does until it's been that way for 3 years) but I'm running into errors across all of the sites on this server.

I've only been able to make it happen on 'Post Comment' pages. Sometimes the page will load completely and everything will be fine, other times the page will error out completely, or else only a portion of the page will load.

I have NO clue what is causing this. However, the only thing all of these pages have in common that other pages don't is the captcha image.

So, pretty much I'm just notifying everyone that this is a problem and I'm working to resolve it. I've never noticed this problem until I had to move everything to this server on the 11th so I think it's server related. I'm going to try to get the error to be produced on other pages now.

So.. A run down of today and why there was 3 or 4 hours of downtime.

I was looking into playing with the YouTube API but it requires PHP5, my servers run PHP4 still. I decided I would try to make the upgrade and was going to wait until the wee hours of the morning but was too eager and didn't want to stay up all night.

I went around and attempted to upgrade PHP around 4 or 5pm, not sure really.

Immediately things went horribly wrong, and it really had nothing to do with PHP at all, but some other aspects of the operating system that were trying to be installed and updated that PHP5 needed before it could install.

After playing with that for a long time I decided it was a lost cause and that server was now, until I can do a more serious fix, unuseable. So, RIP "zed" (the server) you were long lived and the first and original web server.

At this point lots of stuff was installing and trying to happen and I became aware of the fact that I could no longer log into ZED at all, so with the few areas that I still WAS logged in, I had to make it count. I backed up EVERY web site on the server, EVERY FILE on those web sites. Except user icons. I realized this and freaked, but luckily the main console was still open and logged in and as my luck would have it, that server was connected to the cache server so I could zip all the user icons for Bzoink and Woohu and transfer them to the cache server. Once done with that, I grabbed the files from the cache server on the new server and unzipped and placed accordingly.

A labored switch of IP address in the DNS and everything is back up and running as far as I can tell. There were some file permission issues.. And I'm still concerned that there will be more (specifically with user icons) but I can't find any.

So that's about it. If you find anything going wrong LET ME KNOW.

As for now, I'm either heading home or taking apart zed and trying to give him a fresh install.. But probably not because I'm keeping it running and logged in just in case I discover more files that I need to copy from him.

Meh. It's days like this where I'm bawling my eyes and frustrated and tell myself I want to be a truck driver.

Statistical Surveys!

Statistical Surveys are here!

They might be buggy, I almost promise you that. And they might even mess up the old surveys somehow, specifically the creation process. If you find anything, PLEASE tell me. They need to be fixed as quickly as possible.

Once I get done posting this I'm going to try to come up with some good surveys to create so that people can start seeing them around the site. I encourage you to create some too! Same way as creating a normal survey, only now when you try to create a survey you're presented with 'Original' and 'Statistical'.

Yay for new features!

Andy is calling for help up in Cedar Springs. I have a lot of drywall and crap to throw in a giant dumpster. And I still have a bunch of drywall I need to tear down still, plus then try to tear up all the carpet.

Any help in carrying stuff to the dumpsters would be appreciated. I'll probably be here until 8pm. 86 N Main.. Next to CarQuest. Big '86' in the front window.

I have the dumpster until Tuesday but some people are a little pissed about it so if at all possible I'd love to get most everything in the dumpster and see if I can't get it picked up on Saturday.

The same server as last time is acting up again. I'd assume the hard drive is on its way out, but the way it's acting it seems to be a heating and cooling issue.

I shut it down for a while, blew into the front of it on the hard drive.. Finally got it running again (for a little while).

I've got the AC turned on up here now. It seems to work fine, but it's going to take a while to get the entire floor cooled down. It was 81 in the one room this morning.. So probably like 90-100 in the server room? I don't know.

I don't have a power cord for the laptop anymore until the new one comes on Monday.. So, I'm about to power down here in case I absolutely need my laptop for something before then.

It appears there was downtime from 8:30 until now. I was sleeping, sorry.

The dns/email machine freaked out. Why this affected everything like it did, I don't know. Maybe I need to raise my expiration times on the DNS records. That's all I can figure.

Yay for lame new sites. I just switched the DNS records over to the three TC machines instead of the main web machine so the site might not load for everyone yet, but should for most people.

Know something about me? Tell me.Get your own ThingsAboutME.com page

I feel like there's massive possibility that I overlooked something considering this site is quite easy and basic.. Yet it's been a work in progress for amost a year, and things come together very chaotically here in the end.

Long story short, let me know if you run into any bugs.

Facebook version to come.. eventually.
