Belfast: 'Down Our Street' by George Callaghan

'Down Our Street' is a reference to George Callaghan's Belfast roots. The back-to-back terraced houses of the industrial city are portrayed in a playful and almost dream-like way as if an amalgam of memories from Callaghan's childhood. Callaghan plays with perspective allowing the street to fall away and the houses to appear to go on forever. In the distance Cave Hill, tall cranes and chimneys, a gasometer and a church spire all help to identify the scene as Belfast.

no to love

He would not stay for me, and who can wonder?
He would not stay for me to stand and gaze.
I shook his hand and tore my heart in sunder
And went with half my life about my ways.
