Last night we went to the 11 o'clock evening service in the big protestant church in the middle of the city. I was able to record the sound of the church bells ringing at midnight. Merry Christmas y'all.

My family has flown into Germany! I received a call from them half an hour ago saying they had their luggage and had to find the car rental area. Soooo I'll see them in a few hours! Excitement! Seriously, try going without a family for six months sometime. It makes you appreciate them more.

Hoorays for Weihnachtspause! I get two weeks off. It reminds me of high school. Except my exams will be in February. Gosh darn crazy German semester system.

I made melt in your mouth cookies yesterday. Among them is a decapitated snowman. Troy watched and got psychically sent tastes of cookie dough and icing. Mmmm....

300 to dreihundert
I got 300 the other day and finally watched it in German (after first watching it in English and remembering the good ol' days when Troy and I saw it in theater with some friends of his from Hoekje). I decided to write down some translations of favorite quotes. I's a geek, it is awesome.

Queen Gorgo: Only Spartan women give birth to real men
Weil nur die Frauen Spartas wahre Maenner gebaeren

Leonidas: Madness? This is Sparta!
Wahnsinn? Das ist Sparta!

Persian:A thousand nations of the Persian empire descend upon you. Our arrows will blot out the sun!
1.000 Voelker des persischen Reiches werden ueber euch herfallen. Unsere Pfeile werden die Sonne verdunkeln!
Stelios: Then we will fight in the shade!
Dann kaempfen wir im Schatten!

Persian general: Spartens! Lay down your weapons!
Spartiaten! Legt eure Waffen nieder!
Leonidas: Persians! Come and get them!
Perser! Kommt und holt sie euch!

Leonidas: Besides, there's no reason we can't be civil, is there?
Ausserdem, gibt es keinen Grund sich nicht anstaendig zu benehmen, oder?

Xerxes: [....] There is much our cultures could share.
Wir koennen so viel von einander lernen.
Leonidas: Haven't you noticed? We've been sharing our culture with you all morning.
Noch nicht gemerkt? Wir haben es euch schon den ganzen Morgen gegeben.

Dilios: Immortals....we put their name to the test
Die Unsterblichen....wir pruefen, ob sie ihren Namen zu Recht tragen.

Leonidas: Dilios, I trust that "scratch" hasn't made you useless?
Dilios, der Kratzer setzt dich wohl nicht ausser Gefecht?
Dilios: Hardly, my lord, it's just an eye. The gods saw fit to grace me with a spare.
Kaum, Herr. Es war nur ein Auge. Die Goetter waren so gnaedig, mir ein zweites zu schenken.

Leonidas: Tonight we dine in hell!
Denn heute Nacht speisen wir in der Hoelle!

Sometimes I wish I had the power to uncomplicate life for everyone. Troy can have his Hiro Nakamura powers. Heroes is loading too slowly, so I'm making my own episode up. Har har har.

Things Rachelle and I noticed while shopping yesterday
*Germans have smaller feet (although I'm still in Cinderella range)
*Germans are generally taller (damn them)
*Germans generally have wider shoulders but a smaller chest (stupid boobs)
*Gluehwein tastes better than regular wine (only a cup can get you buzzed)
*Germany is Christmas-happy-crazy (w00ts!)
*German songs are funny (True story: Rachelle and I were in a store and suddenly Ice Ice Baby came on, except it was in German. It was "Scheiss Scheiss Baby". Then that one annoying Usher song came on, and it was in German as well. The annoying electronic doot doot part sounded like a cell phone)
*German-Chinese food is the best food EVAR

It's raining again. But then again, it's always raining in Paderborn. I think I saw some snowflakes on Thursday, but they probably melted as soon as they hit the ground. The temperature here is always just above freezing. It's around 5 degrees right now. My roommate said that Paderborn hardly ever gets more than an inch of snow. So the white Christmas we all cherish and enjoy (even though we didn't have one last year) will most likely be rainy.

This week was a typical week in the life of Katie. Sleep deprivation, class, sleeping in, being lazy, grocery shopping adventures, etc. The study abroad office already wants class choices for next semester, although the semester is only a month in for me and I won't know what my class choices will be until at least January. It's at times like these where I ask myself why I had to get so bitten by the wanderlust bug that I'd go through a study abroad program where my study abroad adviser is Russian (not German, and she doesn't speak German at all) and the office doesn't seem to understand that semesters work differently over here.

I think I kinda understand how Kyle felt at Hope. I'm totally the only cool kid here in Paderborn. I go off and do my own hip things. Kyle, next year I'm totally going to hijack a car and come visit you in Holland. We can be cool and hip together. Even if the cool, hip thing we have to do is you help get me out of jail for hijacking a car.

I think the British army base here in Paderborn has cursed Paderborn so the weather is like Great Britain. I swear we have rain every week, and sometimes rain everyday. One time it rained for a whole day and night. I was telling Troy to get me two of every animal so I could be a Noah and float back to the States in my ark.

My room is now semi-Christmasafied. I've got lights up and put the tree on the stand where Lydia's TV would probably have gone. I ate my feast leftovers for lunch (there are still some leftovers left though). Right now Darcy and I are talking about watching Disney films in Japanese and German. We're so cool.

I wish I had something more exciting to say, but there's really nothing to say. Yesterday was just another day in Germany. However it will soon be December, and Germans are very big about Christmas and traditions and whatnot. I think Theres and I will celebrate St. Nicholas Day. That would be cool.

Happy day of feasting and turkeys and togetherness and families, yo.

Darcy (my friend who is in Japan right now) and I get cool points because we had a 4 hour long conversation on Skype.

I had a feast of epic proportions for one person and took pictures. My family skyped me and we talked for a while. I got to see all my relatives.

So I bought more yarn for these crazy crochet projects I've got in mind (plushies of Avatar characters for friends, scarves, random objects of what the eff, etc), and totally forgot to get stuffing. Geh. Which means another walk to Suedring tomorrow just to pick up effing cotton balls (aka the cheapest and nicest stuffing ever). Bleh. Oh well, at least then I can peruse the medication aisle at Rewe and [hopefully] find some sort of decongestant.

The weather this week has been icky cold nasty wet rainy foggy yuck. My professor for my Graham Greene class is awesome, and my professor for American Lit is hilarious. I love school, school is cool, let's all learn!

The flat has become a flat of sickness. I'm sick, Theres is sick, our stuffed animals are sick, the cow is sick, the moon is sick, the sink is sick, etc.

I introduced Theres to rice krispies treats last night (although Germany didn't have any rice krispies so I substituted with a different cereal) and she liked it. So I'm going to take a couple squares with me to my American Lit class today and give them to Rachelle if she shows up. Apparently she and her boy are on the rocks again, but this time it's serious. Rice krispies treats heal all!

The boy and I are doing well. We're happy even though we're a kajillion miles apart. According to my parents, us maintaining this uber long distance relationship is a good thing. It really helps in relationships. Oh, and according to my dad, I'm a gypsy. Whee!
