I just watched my friend die a violent natural death. I'd like to know what happened.

I just checked my bank account online and found I had more money than I thought.

Economic Stimulus Payment was $458. Not the $600 I had hoped for, but I'll take what I can get. I think it means this is HDTV TIME! Who wants to buy my old (new) tv?

They don't make can openers like they used to.
I bought a can opener to replace the one that we have; it was grimy and old.
I tried using the new can opener and it essentially wrecked the top of the can, bending the rim every which way and puncturing only half the time.
Couldn't get the can open, totally ruined my dinner plans for Dinty Moore Beef Stew.
I ended up heating a can of tuna in the microwave, got the cats all riled up.
After the stew failure, I got the old can opener, and gave it a good scrub down/soak in bleach. "Ecko Miracle Can Opener #885". It must be 20+ years old. Still opens the cans with absolute ease. No need to apply too much pressure to keep it on the lid. If there is one thing that will last my lifetime, it's that can opener.

In other news..

I quit my stupid fucking job (or rather, put in my 2 weeks) on the 26th of April. I was seriously getting tired of that place. Our night specialist has spoiled bitch syndrome and when she doesn't have a headache, toothache, or some other physical ailment, she's walking as slow as she can, talking with the cashier, or simply disappearing for 15-20 minutes. We all hate her. The thing is, we all told management not to put her in the night stock specialist position because of these reasons, and they did it anyway. On Monday we all had a sitdown and they tried to ask us why we weren't being as productive as other stores. Why we hated work, called in more, and just didn't perform as well as we "should be". For the most part we kept silent. I'm probably going to tell them that it's because we have a shit specialist bossing us around.

I started on the last week of January 2007 at a meager $7.75 an hour. I had to fight tooth and nail to be relieved of "casual part time" title to "regular part time" in order to get the 10% discount. That took them six months, and they kept making excuses as to why I wasn't getting it. Excuses like "it does it automatically" or "you have to work for more than 24 hrs a week for 16 weeks" (which I had been working 40+ since I started).

Recently I learned 3 months after I had been hired, they bumped up wages to $8.75. They didn't tell me about it, didn't bump me up. Just kept me there, and started hiring in the new people at that rate. After I found out I asked them what the deal was and they said they would look into it. This, followed by "We're going to give you a 30-day trial in harder aisles to see if you can handle a challenge before we give you what we're already paying everyone else" concluded in my divergence.

I won't miss it. I'll miss a couple co-workers, but I've made sure to invite them to my 21st (in 2 months). Saturday is my last night there, and then I start working for my dad, or rather WITH my uncle. I guess we're putting a business together where the company will be making 12-20k profit a week.
It's being done right now but none of it is on paper or in records, I don't know how they're going to work that out. It's being funneled into dad's other business.

Needless to say I'll be making lots of monies. I plan on tearing down this house and either replacing it with an updated double wide or just building a new house. We've finally picked up the remainder of the garage. What's left of that is piles of dirt with small parts and pieces of metal and what-have-you. Still need to figure out how I'm moving that. Now we're moving to the basement. Finally got that burn pit out of my yard, the one with the couch frame, fiberglass, metal, ceramic, etc. in it. I don't know what dad was thinking when he burnt that..

Things are moving. It's almost a good feeling.

So I'm not sure if I mentioned this.

I got a PSP slim lite, Feb 20th. I love it.

Snatched a 4GB card for it at best buy. _might_ have to change it up to 8GB ;P

Now I'm running custom firmware v3.90 M33-2 and playing ISO's of games instead of having to switch around UMD's, and ripping UMD's to ISO's from the PSP to my computer ;D

Economic Stimulus Payment Notice

Dear Taxpayer:

We are pleased to inform you that the United States Congress passed and President George W. Bush signed into law the Exonomic Stimulus Act of 2008, which provides for economic stimulus payments to be made to over 130 million American households. Under this new law, you may be entitled to a payment of up to $600 ($1,200 if filing a joint return), plus additional amounts for each qualifying child.

We are sending this notice to let you know that based on this new law the IRS will begin sending the one-time payments starting in May. To receive a payment in 2008, individuals who qualify will not have to do anything more than file a 2007 tax return. The IRS will determine eligibility, figure the amount, and send the payment. This payment should not be confused with any 2007 income tax refund that is owed to you by the federal government. Income tax refunds for 2007 will be made separately from this one-time payment.

For individuals who normally do not have to file a tax return, the new law provides for payments to individuals who have a total of $3,000 or more in earned income, Social Security benefits, and/or certain veterans' payments. Those individuals should file a tax return for 2007 to receive a payment in 2008.

Individuals who qualify may receive as much as $600 *$1,200 if married filing jointly). Even if you pay no income tax but have a total of $3,000 or more in earned income, Social Security benefits, and/or certain veterans' payments, you may receive a payment of $300 ($600 if married filing jointly).

In addition, individuals eligible for payments may also receive an additional amount of $300 for each child qualifying for the child tax credit.

For taxpayers with adjusted gross income (AGI) of more than $75,000 (or more than $150,000 if married filing jointly), the payment will be reduced or phased out completely.

To qualify for the payment, an individual, spouse, and any qualifying child myst have a valid Social Security number. In addition, individuals cannot receive a payment if they can be claimed as a dependent of another taxpayer or they filed a 2007 Form 1040NR, 1040NR-EZ, 1040-PR, or 1040-SS.

All individuals receiving payments will receive a notice and additional information shortly before the payment is made. In the meantime, for additional information, please visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov.

I have the night off, the last night off I will have for a very long time. The possibilities? Endless.

The reality? Disappointing.

If you didn't understand that, maybe when you're older and you have a third shift job. That sort of thing pretty much kills your social life.

The future of video; A choice.

Blu-Ray or HD-DVD?

Blu-Ray holds up to 50GB on their dual layer; HD-DVD: 30GB dual layer.

HD-DVD's final specifications for their format are _still_ being worked out.

As of Nov. 27, 2007, Blu-Ray had 71 more titles available than HD-DVD.

I think we have a winner.

Higher quality and/or more room for special features.

Tell HD-DVD to suck it, go Blu-Ray.

I have learned my lesson...

So, I've been piggy-backing off my cousin's server for free for the last 6 years, the only payment I've made was the domain name this year when he forgot to pay it. BUT he sold all of his business (including the server which windedhero.com is hosted from) to another ISP. The server previously remained unscathed by the ISP, simply ignoring the fact that it was connected to the T1 that he sold them.

Now, my site's been suspended. I have the server password so I logged back in and un-suspended my site so I could back up all my work in case they wised up.

And here's the lesson I've learned.

NO MORE FLAT FILE DB. I have 4603 files, 3967 are from the journal and its users. I couldn't just download a single file database. I don't believe in SQL or external databases. Each post, friend request, friend and allowed friend is a text file. I think in the future I might either simply develop a simple backup device that puts all those files in a convenient zip for me to download (although that would require quite a lengthy upload should the need arise to restore it... unless I could do a zip decompress also), or some way to just store and read each user's profile as a zip (although that might prove to be adverse for the conditions as well, depending on the amount of users.)

Still, I don't consider SQL of any kind as an option. That's just one more cog that could break in a giant machine of interconnected cogs.

Happy holidays, everyone.

Tell your parents you love them; some of us are less fortunate when it comes to functional, involved parents. Tell your siblings you love them. As Baz Luhrmann said, "they are the best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future".

Wow...

Simba is suffering from separation anxiety.

I was reading online about why he might be pissing on the dirty laundry (whether it's him or Ace, I'm still not sure), and I started reading about separation anxiety in cats, and he fits that description hardcore.

* Excessive vocalization (crying, moaning, meowing)
* Not eating or drinking while owner is away
* Eliminating (often urinations) in inappropriate places
* Vomiting, food or hair often are contained in the vomit.
* Excessive self-grooming
* Destructive behavior
* Exuberant greetings when the owner returns home

He does all of those things (save for the ones I crossed out).

The steps I can take:
* Provide perches so the cat can look outside.
--He perches on the couch. Every morning I get home he jumps down from the couch and starts meowing at me to go to his food so I can watch him eat it -_-
* Toys, toys and toys
--Uh.. he's 12. The only thing he plays with is the floor, when I rub catnip all over it.
* Let your cat "hunt" for food by placing food in a toy that will make the cat work to get the food out.
--Perhaps.
* Hide food throughout the house so the cat has to find it.
--WTF? He's 12 years old. I doubt he's going to go on a scavenger hunt for some food. More likely than not, I'll just have stale cat food all over the hose.
* Leave the radio or TV on, tuned to your usual station.
--I recently installed a wall outlet timer so dad's TV wouldn't be on 24/7... Don't think I'll be doing this.
* Call home and leave a message for the cat.
--Uhh... no.
* Provide a refuge
--Sounds like some work
* Spend at least 10 minutes daily playing with your cat.
--I spend at least an hour every morning with him on my lap.

It turns out Simba wasn't the one missing the box and aiming for the floor. It was our senile old bat, Ace.
